OFFAL: Original Works by Alex Kuno
September 8, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Offal, a new series of surreal anatomical illustrations, is a more direct and intimate response to the incessant unveiling of an almost comical amount of impending global catastrophes. Partly inspired by vintage medical and botanical illustrations, the characters that have populated the Miscreants of Tiny Town series for years are shown here in Offal going through some pretty dramatic changes themselves. Their organs are bursting with botanical forms, tumors wink at us from behind ribcages, long-dormant vestigial organs sprout flowers while ribbons of old skin billow about them like flowing capes. Ancient secrets are suddenly exposed, a violent genetic memory is inexplicably awakened, but their final forms are a mystery. Authoritarian scholar Sarah Kendzior (from her article “Donald Trump, Russia, and the Mystery of ‘These People’” for The Correspondent) pretty much sums it up: “That we do not know just what we live on the precipice of is the most unnerving thing of all.”
