Elderberry Growers Meetup
March 3, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Join Chris Patton of Midwest Elderberry Cooperative and Pete Widin of Artisan Environments for an informative discussion on growing native black elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) as a cash crop in our region. Chris will give a short presentation, and we’ll have a Q+A conversation about what it’s really like to invest in, set up, and cultivate this up-and-coming crop in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Other active elderberry farmers may also be present to share their experiences. This event is free; RSVPs are greatly appreciated.
Chris Patton is Founder and President of Midwest Elderberry Cooperative and also of the River Hills Harvest Marketers, LLC, which markets that retail brand of elderberry products nationally. He grew elderberry for six years in partnership with Paul Otten at Natura Farms in Scandia, MN and now focuses on building the regional community of independent growers to meet existing and growing demand for elderberry flowers and fruit.
Pete Widin, MLA, is a Stillwater-based edible and native landscape planner at Artisan Environments, LLC. He consults on elderberry systems and believes that a core answer to climate change and revitalization of rural communities is through diversifying landscapes with in-demand perennial crops.
