Stacey Combs of ‘stace of spades’
May 1, 2018
Stacey is an artist and illustrator and Chicagoland expat who made Minnesota home. She is mostly self-taught, with a little guidance along the way. She derives inspiration from pop-culture, mental health concerns, politics and nature. Though her subject matter varies greatly, her images convey a core value in her grungy style. Her work for the Natural Heritage Project derived from personal struggles with mental health. She wanted to drive a connection to human existence and the positive effects of nature – that we as people need not taking from it, but heal within it. Stacey has selected plants from the WNHWL that are believed medicinally to aid in mental health care. She also wants us to consider what it would mean if these threatened species completely disappear. As with all of the artist in the Natural Heritage Project, Stacey wants us to understand how we are interconnected and interdependent. Stacy works to emphasize how critical it is to be good land stewards for generations beyond.
