Your help is needed to protect the future of the St. Croix River Valley!

The Wisconsin Farmers Union is looking for folks who are:
1) Concerned about a 26,000 hog CAFO coming to Polk County
2) Interested in joining a campaign to have authentic conversations with folks in Polk County

WFU is offering a second free virtual training on deep canvassing, which is a strategy used to have two-way conversations that are rooted in shared values and personal experiences. The goal of these conversations will be to guide the people you speak with to realize why they care about the CAFO issue or give them the space to reevaluate their previous perspective. We want to make sure we get an ordinance passed in Polk County that keeps the people, land, and water we love safe, and we believe this can be done by having meaningful conversations.

To learn more either join our virtual Deep Canvassing Info Session Wednesday, August 26th from 7-8pm by registering here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScriuqyisw7DTC-QqL-wme87g5iK70EeW8S57KsnnVgLuS2vg/viewform or contact Kathleen Hobert at khobert25@gmail.com or 414-614-8043.

Racism penetrates and impacts our entire society, including the food system; it influences who has access to healthy food, land, and agricultural credit. A recent Mother Jones article cites the following: “In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners. Today, only about 49,000 of them remain, making up just 1.4 percent of the nation’s farm owners, and tending a scant 4.7 million acres—a nearly 90 percent loss…This didn’t happen by accident. Since Emancipation, Black farmers have had to fight for a share of this country’s fertile ground, due to a history of racist policies and land theft.”[i] Farm Table’s recent newsletter featured an interview with Emily Hanson of Whetstone Farm — about her journey toward antiracism action and relationships with grassroots organizations in the Twin Cities working to get food to those who need it most. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
Peaceful Outdoor Rally – August 18, 2020, 5 PM
Polk County Government Center
100 Government Plaza, Balsam Lake

Rally with your neighbors. Ask the board to get behind an operations ordinance for CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) in Polk County.

Craft your message. Make your sign. Put on your mask. Join the rally, rain or shine!

WHY?
Global hog industry giants want to build pig factories in Burnett and Polk counties. They’ve already found someone to sell them land for a factory that would house more than 26,000 hogs in Burnett County. Piglets born in the Burnett County facility would be fattened at other plants. Each factory typically produces millions of gallons of water pollution and will negatively impact public health and real estate values.

Polk County’s Board of Supervisors need a clear message. Join the rally!
HALF-PRICE BURGERS! Happy Hour just got a little sweeter! Saturdays, 3-5 PM, we’re serving half-price burgers with drink purchase. Enjoy $1 OFF tap wine + beer, $10 pitchers of beer, and a seasonal cocktail feature.

Plantains are known as nature’s bandaid among herbalists. Plantain is abundant and good for all manner of minor burns, cuts, rashes, stings, and digestive issues. Plantain contains substances which might help decrease pain and inflammation. It might also be able to kill bacteria and fungi. Making a salve from plantain is one of the best ways to start a home herbal first aid kit!⠀

WHY EAT LOCAL?

Eating food grown in the region on small, family farms by people we know is tradition, and the way our grandparents did it. Eating local keeps that tradition alive in the soil and through the food we grow, buy, sell, and eat!

Local systems are built on caring for the land, including its soil, plants, animals, and people.

Fresher tastes better: food that travels less distance stays fresher for longer.

Buying from small businesses and supporting neighbors sustains and strengthens communities.

Produce grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers, meaning soil isn’t depleted of nutrients or left full of toxins, and water quality isn’t jeopardized.

Animals are pasture-raised, humanely, using multi-species practices that creates diverse microbial soil content.

Knowing our farmers, eating what grows near us, and tasting the variations of seasons, returns us to a more direct connection to each other and the natural world we live in. Plus it’s fun and tastes SO GOOD!

Buying locally produced food keeps local farms strong so you always have access to the food you need. Local food is essential to our local economy, to the health of our communities, and to the environment.

Take the pledge to swap out one non-local item for one grown by a local farmer: https://localfoodisessential.org/

Shown here are the Pipe Bikers and Jill with their golden beet cake!

We received such a nice note from one of the bike group’s organizers, we thought we’d share:

“Everyone sang the praises of Jill. She checked in twice beforehand and had everything set up when I stopped by before our trail ride. She welcomed people as they straggled in and ushered us through our experience making sure everyone was comfortable.

Chef Sarah did a wonderful job with the food. We had fresh bruschetta, beer-braised onion pizza, beet deviled eggs, and radish pico de gallo. Every dish was tasty and perfect for the weather, leaving just enough room for cake.

It was such a pleasant way to enjoy a group bike ride. I hope other bikers take advantage of pre-ride coffee and post-ride lunch at Farm Table. The trail was full of flowers and the tree canopy offered a fair amount of shade. Riders can easily select any distance, between two and 26 miles. What an excellent combination of food, drink, setting, and exercise!

I already have my book group scheduled for a visit too. Thanks again for the generous treat!”
