FOOD RULE #25: Eat your colors.

“The idea that a healthy plate of food will feature several different colors is a good example of an old wives’ tale that turns out to be good science too. The colors of many vegetables reflect the different antioxidant phytochemicals they contain [ . . . ] many of these chemicals help protect against chronic diseases, but each in a slightly different way, so the best protection comes from a diet containing as many different phytochemicals as possible.”

[From Michael Pollan’s “Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual"]

There are a plethora of colors on our menu this time of year. TRY: any of our salads (there’s a FRESH BLUEBERRY SALAD on special this week), CHILLED BEET GAZPACHO, NOURISH BOWLS, and more!

At Farm Table we grow many amazing pollinator-attracting plants, including this bee magnet, Anise Hyssop (or Agastache Foeniculum). We love this one because it smells amazing (like licorice), is beautiful, and pollinators obviously adore it!

Anise Hyssop is a species of perennial plant in the mint family. This plant is native to much of north-central and northern North America. It does great in full sun or part shade. You can harvest the leaves and flowers to dry for tea, or make into syrups, bitters, and tinctures.

Next time you visit, check out Farm Table’s pollinator garden which was designed to provide shelter, nectar, pollen, and nesting sites to attract pollinators.
